Why I Am Sketching

People often assume that sketches are meant to be finished works, something polished and complete. For me, it’s the opposite. Sketching is where things are allowed to be uncertain, messy, and open-ended. It’s not about creating something perfect—it’s about discovering something real.
When I sketch, I’m essentially thinking on paper. It’s a space where ideas can exist without pressure. A blank canvas can feel intimidating, almost demanding something meaningful right away. But a sketchbook doesn’t ask for perfection. It invites experimentation.
I use sketching as a way to explore possibilities. I try out different compositions, shift shapes around, exaggerate forms, and simplify others. Sometimes I’ll draw the same idea multiple times, each version slightly different, just to see what feels right. It’s like asking “what if?” over and over again until something clicks.
Often, what I imagine in my head doesn’t translate the way I expect—and that’s exactly the point. Sketching shows me what fails just as much as what succeeds. It helps me understand what to push forward and what to leave behind.
But more than anything, sketching helps me find the feeling of a painting. Before I commit to a larger piece, I want to know what it’s supposed to say. Is it calm or chaotic? Soft or intense? Controlled or loose? These are things I can’t always plan intellectually—I have to feel them out, and sketching is how I get there.
There’s also a certain freedom in knowing that a sketch doesn’t have to be seen by anyone else. It can be raw, unfinished, even ugly. That freedom makes it honest. And honesty is what I’m really searching for in my work.
In the end, sketching isn’t just preparation—it’s part of the creative process itself. It’s where ideas are born, challenged, and reshaped. It’s where I get closer to understanding what I want to paint, and why.
So if my sketchbook looks chaotic or incomplete, that’s a good sign. It means I’m in the middle of figuring something out. And usually, that’s where the best work begins.
